What We Believe

Articles of Faith

“...a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us.” Luke 1:1

1. We believe in the infallible verbal inspiration of the whole Bible, II Timothy 3:16, 17.

2. We believe in the Triune God (God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), Matthew 28:19; II Corinthians 13:14.

3. We believe in the Genesis account of Creation, Genesis Chapters 1 and 2.

4. We believe in the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ, Luke 1:34, 35; Matthew 1:20, 21.

5. We believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ, John 10:30.

6.  We believe in the vicarious (substitute) sacrifice of Jesus Christ, Hebrews 2:9.

7. We believe that salvation is wholly by grace through faith in Christ, Ephesians 2:8, 9; and that all believers are preserved eternally, John 10:27-30; Romans 8:38, 39.

8. We believe in the bodily resurrection and ascension of Jesus, (I Corinthians 15); the bodily resurrection of His saints, (I Thessalonians 4:13-18); and in that “Blessed Hope,” the personal, imminent return of Christ who will rapture His Church prior to the seven-year tribulation period. At the end of the Tribulation, Christ will personally and visibly return with His saints to establish His earthly Messianic Kingdom which was promised to the nation of Israel. Psalms 89:3-4; Daniel 2:31-45; Zechariah 14:4-11; I Thessalonians 1:10, 4:13-18; Titus 2:13; Revelation 3:10, 19:11-16, 20:1-6.

9. We believe in the Bible doctrine of eternal punishment of the finally impenitent, Matthew 25:46; II Thessalonians 1:8,9.

10. We believe that a Scriptural church is a visible assembly of baptized believers, Matthew 18:17; covenanted together under New Testament law for the purpose of carrying out the Great Commission, Matthew 28:19; with an unbroken history from the personal ministry of Jesus on earth to this present day, I Corinthians Chapter 1.

11. We believe that a Scriptural Baptism is immersion of believers (Acts 8:36-39); administrated by a New Testament church, and is the door into the local assembly. We believe the Lord’s Supper is a memorial ordinance, open to faithful church members of like faith and beliefs. I Corinthians 11:23-24.

12. We hold what true Baptists have ever held: That the Great Commission was given to the churches only; that in kingdom activities the church is the only unit in associated work; that each church should exercise equal authority; and that the churches should meet their responsibilities according to their several abilities, Acts 15:1-29.

13. We believe that all co-operating bodies, such as Associations, Conventions, boards, committees, etc., are and properly should be servants of the churches, Matthew 20:25-28.

14. We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity should be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. We believe that any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery, and pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex. (Genesis 2:24, 19:5,13, 26:8-9; Leviticus 18:1-30; Romans 1:26-29; I Corinthians 5:1, 6:9; I Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4) These acts emanate from man’s sinful and unregenerate nature. Therefore, we take our stand, based upon the infallible Word of God, against all forms of sexual perversion. If any person, who is in any way connected with the ministry of East Side Baptist Church, is guilty of advocating or practicing the above, that person shall be disciplined and dismissed from service in the ministry of the Church according to the mandate and principles of the Holy Bible. I Corinthians 5:1-4; Gen. 19:11; Leviticus 20:13; Judges 19:22-25; I Timothy 1:9-10

15. We believe that God hates divorce and intends marriage to last until one of the spouses dies. Divorce and remarriage is regarded as adultery except on the grounds of fornication. Although divorced and remarried persons or divorced persons may hold positions of service in the Church and be greatly used of God in Christian service, they may not be considered for the offices of pastor or deacon. Mal. 2:14-17; Matthew 19:3-12; Romans 7:1-3; I Timothy 3:2, 12; Titus 1:6

16. We believe that human life begins at conception and that the unborn child is a living human being. Abortion constitutes the unjustified, unexcused taking of unborn human life. Abortion is murder. We reject any teaching that abortions of pregnancies due to rape, incest, birth defects, gender selection, birth, or population control, or the mental well-being of the mother are acceptable. Job 3:16; Ps. 51:5; Ps. 139:14-16; Isa. 44:24, 49:1,5; Jeremiah 1:5, 20:15-18; Luke 1:44

17. We believe that Christians are prohibited from bringing civil lawsuits against other Christians or the Church to resolve personal disputes. We believe the Church possesses all the resources necessary to resolve personal disputes between members. We do believe, however, that a Christian may seek compensation for injuries from another Christian’s insurance company as long as the claim is pursued without malice or slander. I Corinthians 6:1-8; Ephesians 4:31-32
